Art

Intent:

At Farncombe Infant School we aim to deliver and fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for art and design, to provide a broad and balanced curriculum. We provide
opportunities for the children to use a range of methods and skills which are developed as they progress through our school.

This will be achieved through:

  • Providing all children with opportunities to ensure progressive development

  • Developing the children’s appreciation of the diverse cultural heritage within the school and local community.

  • Encouraging the children to express themselves creatively using a wide range of media

Implementation:

The implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum at Farncombe Infant School is based on the National Curriculum, which provides a broad framework and outlines the knowledge and skills taught in each Key Stage. To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in art and design, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school from Reception to Year 2. Classes follow the Access Art scheme of work which has been developed to provide teachers with lessons for use with their class and use the progression of knowledge and skills document. This ensures the curriculum is covered and the skills/knowledge taught is progressive from year group to year group.

We display and celebrate the pupils’ artwork in their classes, children use sketch books to record.

The National Curriculum for Art aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products

  • Use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination

  • Develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work

Through art we aim to ensure all pupils:

  • To develop an understanding and opportunity to explore the work of artists, crafts people and designers

  • To develop the children’s understanding of shape, colour, form, texture and pattern; developing their ability to use materials and processes in order to communicate their ideas

  • To develop the children’s appreciation of the richness of our multi-cultural heritage

  • To provide opportunities for reviewing and modifying their own work

If you were to walk into an Art lesson at Farncombe you would see:

  • Lessons that allow the children to show Inspiration, Imagination and Individuality.

  • Children who are happy to talk about what they are doing and share their work.

  • Children who are confident in using a variety of tools and materials in their artwork.

  • Children who are focused and engaged when working on independent and collaborative pieces.
